Bestselling French author, screenwriter and film director Philippe Claudel taught French for some years before working in specialised centres for children with motor disabilities, as well as teaching courses in literature and anthropology at the University of Nancy. His novel "Les Âmes grises" ("Grey Souls", 2003) won the Renaudot Prize in France, Sweden’s Martin Beck Award, was short listed for the American Gumshoe Award, and has been translated into 31 languages.

Claudel adapted "Les Âmes grises" for film in 2005, and wrote and directed "I’ve Loved You So Long", starring Kristin Scott Thomas, which premiered recently at the Berlin Film Festival, and is due for release in March. Claudel is also a Professor of Literature at the University of Nancy in Lorraine.
