James McNeish’s career spans four decades of prodigious output as a journalist, broadcaster, playwright, biographer and novelist. Among his fictions are the 1970 novel “Mackenzie” about the famous 19th-century Canterbury sheep-stealer, and "Lovelock", inspired by the New Zealand runner at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

James’ non-fiction has invited controversy, particularly “The Mask of Sanity”, a study of the Bain murders. His biographies include the widely-translated “Fire under the Ashes” (1965) and “Dance of the Peacocks: New Zealanders in Exile in the Time of Hitler and Mao Tse-tung” (2003). His latest work, “The Sixth Man: the extraordinary life of Paddy Costello”, published locally in 2007, comes out in the UK in June.

Chair: Harry Ricketts.
