Chamber Music New Zealand presents the stunning Brentano String Quartet on their New Zealand debut with a programme featuring a world première performance of a new work by renowned composer Gabriela Frank.
The acclaimed US-based quartet performs at Wellington Town Hall on Thursday 15 November.
Created 15 years ago, the Brentano String Quartet have been quartet-in-residence at Princeton University and London's Wigmore Hall, and have performed in major concert halls and festivals throughout the world. The quartet have been singled out for their technical brilliance, musical insight and stylistic elegance.
Named after Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars believe to have been Beethoven's mysterious "Immortal Beloved", and to whom he wrote his famous love confession, the Brentano String Quartet bring to life the fascinating textures and tonalities of the Renaissance together with a new work by Gabriela Frank.
The programme also includes selected Renaissance works, together with Haydn's String Quartet in G. In Wellington, audiences will experience Beethoven's String Quartet in E Flat while Aucklanders have Bartók's 1939 String Quartet No 6.
The Brentano String Quartet feature Mark Steinberg (violin), Serena Canin (violin), Misha Amory (viola) and Nina Maria Lee (cello).
The accolades have poured in for the quartet; including this from the Times in London. "Such was their ferocity on Saturday night that the instruments almost burst into flames… Make no mistake: the Brentanos are a magnificent string quartet… This was wonderful, selfless music making."

Programme:
Renaissance works selected and transcribed by Mark Steinberg
Haydn: String Quartet in G Opus 62 No 4
Gabriela Frank: world premiere of new work composed for the quartet
Beethoven: String Quartet Opus 127 in E Flat
